The Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses program will begin to build an evidence base for what works to retain experienced nurses in hospital settings and develop a better understanding of the impact of existing interventions. A number of promising interventions have been identified in Wisdom at Work: the Importance of the Older and Experienced Nurse in the Workplace, a white paper commissioned by RWJF.
The program will support up to 18 evaluative research projects of up to $75,000 each for an 18-month period to determine the impact and outcomes of existing interventions aimed at retaining experienced nurses in hospitals.
To be eligible for grants through Wisdom at Work, hospitals must meet two criteria.
- Hospitals must be:
- current or alumni participants in the Center for Health Design's Pebble Project;
- designated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center; or
- recognized as one of 2006's "100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems" by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.
- Hospitals must have implemented a discrete intervention to increase retention of experienced nurses (age 45 and older) in one of three areas: evidence-based physical design and ergonomics; technology; or human resources strategies. These interventions must have been introduced within the last five years, and must be in place currently and continue throughout the 18-month grant period.
